You have just been asked to give a wedding speech. After the initial sensation of feeling honored to be selected to give a speech dissipates, the fear sets in.
What do I say?
How long do I talk?
What are the right things to say and what are the wrong things to say?
How do I engage the audience and leave them with a memorable impression?
How do I deliver the speech with confidence?
This book has over 150 pages and is
part of the S.O.S. (Special Occasion Speech) series. Through our proven
process, we will help save you from the SOS distress signal you feel
right after someone asks you to give a wedding speech. Each one of the
SOS books has a very narrow scope. This particular book was written to
help non-professional speakers (a.k.a. everyday, ordinary people like
you and me) deliver wedding speeches and toasts of all kinds - best man, maid of honor, bride, parents of the bride and parents of the groom - like a pro.
We also recognize that this type of speech is very unique and will not happen very often unless of course you attend a lot of weddings!!!
While the focus of this book is on wedding speeches, we will bring you through a proven step-by-step process that will provide you with a framework for preparing and delivering any speech. We have compiled several of the tools and tips youll need to make your speech a memorable one.
This book (also available in
hardcopy) contains:
43 questions to ask yourself to help you brain storm some ideas
for the speech or toast The proper sequence if there are
multiple people giving toast 14 proven techniques to reduce your anxiety
Outlines and formats for wedding toast and speeches that work Carefully
selected poems, anecdotes, proverbs, toasts, jokes, movie lines, songs and other
types of content that will help you strike the right chord with the audience.
There are over 300 in total and here are just a few:
Anecdote
Example - Humorous
When I was researching my role of best man, I found the
historical origins of the term. Apparently, among the Germanic Goths, a man
married a woman from within his own community. When women were in short supply,
he captured his bride-to-be from a neighboring village. The future bridegroom,
accompanied by a male companion, seized any young girl who had strayed from the
safety of her parental home.
Our custom of a best man is a relic of that two-man,
strong-armed tactic; for such an important task, only the best man would do. I
am pleased to announce that we did not have to do this with BRIDES NAME
but I still would like to prove I am the best man, I have set up an arm
wrestling contest in the backroom at 2pm today
Anecdote Example - Serious
Many of you know of the legendary love Jack Benny had for
his wife, Mary. What you may not know is that on the morning after Jack Benny's
death, Mary, his widow, received a single long-stemmed rose from the local
florist. When another rose was delivered the next day, Mary called the florist
and was told of an order her husband had placed before he died. He had made
provision in his will for the florist to supply "One perfect red rose daily, for
the rest of Mary's life."
Today, I would like to give
the BRIDES NAME a red rose which symbolizes love, beauty and
courage. Everlasting love with GROOMS NAME, the beauty which you
have and the courage to face the difficult times.
Example of Using Multiple
Quotes
Although we have
many serious and not so serious quotes in the book here is an example how we
have brought some together for a humorous toast:
GROOMs NAME
I thought I would give you some advice through the quotes of famous individuals
so you will be well prepared for the journey of marriage.
A husband's last words should always be 'OK buy it'.
Anonymous
Besides "I love you", what three words does a wife want to
hear most?
"I'll fix it. Anonymous
The man who says his wife can't take a joke, forgets that
she took him - Oscar Wilde
Woman like silent men, they think they are listening -
Marcel Achard
A man's wife has more
power over him than the state has. Ralph Waldo Emerson
It is a known fact that
men are practical, hardheaded realists, in contrast to women, who are romantic
dreamers and actually believe that estrogenic skin cream must do something or
they couldn't charge sixteen dollars for that little tiny jar. Jane Goodsell
A man should be taller,
older, heavier, uglier, and hoarser than his wife. Edgar Watson Howe (you can
add, I am pleased to observe GROOMs NAME you fit the description)
There's a way of
transferring funds that is even faster than electronic banking. It's called
marriage. James Holt McGavran
A successful man is one
who makes more money than his wife can spend. A successful woman is one who can
find such a man. Lana Turner
You can't put a price tag on love, but you can on all its
accessories. Melanie Clark
Poem Examples
From This Day Forward
Author Unknown
From this day forward.
You shall not walk alone.
My heart will be your shelter.
And my arms will be your home.
These I Can Promise
Author Unknown
I cannot promise you a life of sunshine;
I cannot promise riches, wealth, or gold;
I cannot promise you an easy pathway
That leads away from change or growing old.
But I can promise all my heart's devotion;
A smile to chase away your tears of sorrow;
A love that's ever true and ever growing;
A hand to hold in yours through each tomorrow.
Joke Example
When GROOM first asked me to be the best man,
I was a little surprised being the typical bachelor. It is not that I havent
been trying but as you know,
marriage is a matter of
give and take So far, I haven't been able to find anybody who'll take what I
have to give.
Maybe it is just me
My most recent girlfriend
I dated for two years and then the nagging started: I want to know your
name. I hate that!
I am getting a little
desperate because of my limited activity so last week I ran an add in the LOCAL
NEWSPAPER NAME saying wife wanted and the next day I received hundreds of
letters all saying the same thing: You can have mine. So it is a lot of
paperwork but I am still pursuing those leads.
Seriously
Trivia Example
If the wedding is in May
You were probably
wondering why GROOM and BRIDE picked the month of May for their wedding date.
Well I was curious as well so I did some research. Apparently, an Ancient
tradition thought it was unlucky to marry in the month of May. One of the
reasons is because during the Romans times, the Festival of the Goddess of
Chastity occurred in May.
I bet GROOM didnt know
that when he agreed to the wedding date
Irish Toast Example
BRIDE and GROOM, I wanted to start out my speech today
with the Irish blessing which says, may the saddest day of your future be no
worse that the happiest day of your past. As we near the end of the celebration
of this wedding I hope that you will remember this day as the happiest day of
your past. As you go forward as husband and wife may your relationship,
friendship and love continue to flourish and may your saddest day be no worse
than the joy we have shared with you today.
Proverb Example
BRIDE and GROOM always
appreciate the love that you have for each other and we honor today. There is
an old Arabian Proverb which says, In order to really love someone you must
love him as though he was going to die tomorrow. Dont let the passion fade
from your romance and live each day as your last.
These are just a few examples of the over 300 that can be found in the book.
