Managers Can Get the Insight They Need to Improve

Managers get feedback from their bosses but bosses usually see only one side of a manager's behavior. Colleagues and subordinates often have a completely different, but equally valid perspective. MSAT is designed specifically to give managers feedback on how their employees and colleagues perceive them with respect to their managerial skills, traits and competencies. This is insight that your managers must have if they are to become more effective and strengthen your company.

MSAT allows a manager to create a custom survey in order to record self perceptions and the perceptions of peers and subordinates regarding the manager's traits, skills and competencies. The tool includes a comprehensive database of over 500 questions covering 49 managerial dimensions. The databases are fully customizable, dimensions and questions may be added, modified or deleted. Three types of question formats may be used: "How frequently...", "To what extent...", and "Agree/disagree...". The exact wording of the formats is customizable and several formats may be used in one survey. Five point answer scales are used, as well as a "Don't know" option.

The manager can write an introductory text for the survey and produce printed copies of the questionnaires and answer sheets. Alternately, a diskette can be produced to present the questions interactively. If the questionnaire option is chosen, then a diskette will also be created with a data entry screen which matches the answer sheet. This permits the survey responses to be entered onto the diskette very quickly, typically less than one minute per respondent.

The survey results can be shown with graphs which compare the scores of the manager's peers, subordinates and self perceptions on selected dimensions or questions. The colorful graphs show, at a glance, where a manager's strengths and weaknesses lie. Since MSAT produces results both summarized by dimension and for specific questions, the manager has an overall picture and the detailed information necessary to start an improvement program immediately. Data from the last three administered surveys can be combined and used to show historical trends. The content of the graphs is fully customizable.

If a manager does not wish to create a survey from scratch, one of several sample surveys which come with the package may be used. These may also be modified.

The MSAT manual contains guidelines on how to develop a good survey and on how to best use the tool.
